The FDM process deposited layer upon layer
of
ABS plastic extruded from a 20mil nozzle.  
The machine first prints an outline of features
on any given layer and then using a raster
pattern fills between the boarders with
adjacent plastic beads.  Over hanging features
are buil
t on a scaffold created from support
material extruded from a second nozzle on the
print head.
Once considered only for large expensive
projects the cost of 3D printing is typically
lower than other rapid prototyping methods.

Sizes are not limited by the build volume
dimensions.  Multiple parts can be printed
and easily joined into larger components.
